Walkers Reserve
The Walkers Institute for Regenerative Research and Design (WIRRED) was born out of the restoration of Walkers Sand Quarry. For more than 50 years, the McNeel family provided an abundance of silica sand to the nation of Barbados while managing to steward and protect one of the largest native beach-side forests on the island. Since 1968 the quarry’s extracted silica sand has been used in nearly every building project across Barbados. But as the construction industry exhausts the sand supply, a new story is emerging — one of biodiversity, ecological health, and regeneration.

This is up there as one of our favorite activities we’ve done thus far on our trip to Barbados. We did the coastal hike and learned so much about the reserve. Elijah was an outstanding guide that was passionate and knowledgeable.
I got overheated at one point and he cracked open some coconuts for me and called a truck down and we did the rest of our tour by vehicle which was just as amazing and worthwhile. I was in good hands and so thankful for Elijah and the rest of the staff!
The views around the reserve and on the beach are amazing. This place is a must visit, especially if you are also passionate about the environment and regenerative practices. I wish I could give more stars!

Elijah was an amazing tour guide at Walkers Reserve! He was so knowledgeable, kind, and informative — you can tell he really cares about the land and its restoration. Such a beautiful place to explore, and it’s inspiring to see all the effort being put into growing and protecting native plants. Highly recommend! 🌿✨

This place is incredible. I’m stayong on the east side of the island and wanted a nature activity, and Walkers delivered. An incredible shoutout and thank you to Mikah, who took so much time preparing me before my hike and then afterward sat with me to go through items I found that fell off trees and pictures of plants I took. I biked over and she took time to help guide me on the directions back to my hotel. The entire staff I encountered were so wonderful as well- thank you Mikah and team.
The work they’re doing in restoration at Walkers is amazing and if you’re a nature lover like me, you won’t regret your visit here.

I visited Walker's Reserve while vacationing in Barbados with my family, and it was a wonderful experience. The tour guide was warm and friendly, and all the staff were very welcoming. The tour itself was a relaxing ride in an open-back truck along scenic trails. We made several stops along the way to pick fruits straight from the trees, including fat pork and sea grapes.
At the end of the tour, we stopped and took a short walk to the beach. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, and we took lots of pictures before heading back. We also got to taste fresh honey made on-site by the bees. Overall, it was a relaxing, educational, and fun experience that I would definitely recommend.
