This historical location with lots of history..surrounding Barbados's past time and when it became independent from colonial Britain.
It was here history was made as Barbados ventured towards it's own jurisdiction of being independent in 1966, one of the National Heroes was also knighted here by the queen...along with other noted events and parades.
But what it's well known for is horse racing, and has drawn tourists from around the globe to witness its spectacle annually as it's part of the visitors calendar.
Though horse racing is an ongoing activity here some weekends throughout the year, it's the prestigious derby every first Saturday in March, that is the hype.
Bringing in some of the top breeded horses from around the Caribbean, Canada, and the US...racing each other for the top prize of a Gold cup and prize money. Many bet on these horses for their enjoyment and winnings.
Though...the limited capacity stands is a ticketed entry, the full outfield is completely free to the public and is where most people are...locals turned the opportunity into a picnic outing with friends and families for an all day affair.
Maybe the only place on the island where you can drink and gamble freely without incident...live entertainment are showcased in the evening for paying patrons in the stands...A good time is had by all who visits.

Lovely day at the races, not too busy, plenty of seating and the food was pretty good too, although a bit of a long wait, but freshly cooked.
The course looks a bit rough, but everything was very professionally run, and some great racing, closely run.
If in Barbados it is definitely worth a visit.

Managed with kind help from the Garrison team to attend a spectacular raceday! Viewed from the comfort of an air conditioned lounge however the covered grandstand also looked fantastic fun and full of raucous supporters. Amazingly we won BIG on the second race 😀 and ended the day cost neutral, take that any day!!

Lots of variety from expensive viewing stand at finish line, to public crowded stand, to open field free for viewing. The most fun is to be with residents in non ticketed area but you miss the finish line. Having tried all three over the years my choice is the free open area where betting sheds are accessible and results are broadcast, but if you want alcohol and fancy sandwiches served buy the ticket to seated stand.

Nice race course. 25BD for the Grand Stand. Bar staff a bit creative with the pricing and rum punch glass sizes. Towards the end the toilets were somewhat due a clean and toilet roll replenish. Staff were friendly, the racing was good.
