I discovered ZR's (what a name!) on my way home from a mix of too many beers and a blur of social dancing partners at Oistins on a Friday night. There was a crowd of mostly young men outside its doors, doing what young men in Barbados seem to be trying to out compete each other in doing nowadays, but what got my attention was the rusty voice being pumped outside by the karaoke microphone. I decided I had to sing a song to say I was ending the night which was one of those nights you don't what to end. I love these grass roots places for how welcoming they are of strangers (I was even christened The Stranger by the DJ who introduced my karaoke song "Here I am" by Air Supply). The DJ is great. I've found that at other establishments DJs have their favourite singers or they know that the crowd has their favourites, and so sometimes they either intentionally, or are prone to, forget when you (The Stranger) requests a song. He did a great job of making sure everyone who wanted to sing, sang. With everyone by 12:30 a.m (when I arrived) marinated into a less inhibited, festive mood, on the inside people danced to the reggae sets between karaoke songs whose singers were boisterously supported no matter the degree to which ears may have secretly disagreed. A small flask of rum and large bottle of water cost $16 - the cost of one drink at some of these "posh" (tiefing) places - and food is on sale, including Bajan fare like chicken livers and gizzards. It's a bar that knows its market and does a good job catering to it. There's a pool table in one adjoining room and arcade machines in another.
